Saccades.
'Witty, and likeably absurdist.' Evening Standard
On Christmas day 2004, I painted a message on a billboard. The message was for my partner of the time who is from Lancashire, from me who is from Yorkshire. The message said My Lancashire hotpot I love you* and I knew my partner would see it as he drove from his house to mine, and I knew he would know it was for him.
When I returned to Glasgow in the New Year, I decided I wanted to do more messages like this, not just for my partner but for other people to, for strangers and friends.
I placed an advert in the Metro newspaper offering to deliver messages of love on behalf of people in whichever form seemed most appropriate.
Saccades is a reflection of this process and attempts to both acknowledge and transcend the difficulty of talking about love and sentiment for those around us, so inherent in British culture. The performance includes my family dog Samantha, who replaces a pottery model towards the end of the performance.
*Lancashire Hot pot is a local dish.
